Who we are
The Turnpike is a new independent arts organisation. Our purpose is to bring the very best art to Leigh, creating new cultural opportunities for all and raising aspiration and resilience across the community.
What we do
We deliver a programme of changing contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year, bringing nationally significant artists to Leigh. These exhibitions are accompanied by artist talks and events. We also host regular performances of touring children's theatre, linked to the exhibition themes, as part of the Big Imaginations network.
Bringing culture to you
Our Learning and Engagement programme engages children, young people, schools and communities in great cultural experiences. Schools can visit our exhibitions for free, supported by our exhibition resources. Teachers can also work with one of our Associate Artists on a creative workshop or project, or participate in artist-led CPD.
We are situated on the first floor of the iconic brutalist Turnpike Centre. We are accessed via stairs or a wheelchair accessible lift. Alongside our main gallery spaces, we have a large workshop space with food/drink facilities, and accessible toilets.
CPD for Staff
Educators working locally are invited to become Turnpike Teachers, our dedicated forum of creative subject leads, arts Coordinators, and enthusiastic teachers. Turnpike Teachers inform and shape the Turnpike Schools Programme, and recieve CPD.
The Turnpike offers artist-led CPD for teachers throughout the year, across a range of mediums. We can also offer bespoke visual arts CPD for your school.
Exhibition Resource Packs are available to download from our website. These are designed to support teachers on self-led visits and with pre/post visit activities.
